Preferences: Sound & Media¶
Me → Preferences → Sound & Media controls volumes, music and media on prims, and voice chat. The tab scrolls, so scroll down for the voice options.
Volume¶
Each slider has a mute button next to it.
| Slider | What it controls |

| All volume | Everything at once. Mute when minimized silences Slipstream while its window is minimised. |
| Buttons | Interface clicks and alerts. |
| Ambient | Wind and other background sound. |
| Sound Effects | Sounds from objects, gestures and avatars. |
| Streaming music | The parcel's music stream. Enabled turns music streams on or off. |
| Media | Media on prims (videos, web pages with sound). Enabled turns media on or off. |
| Voice Chat | Other people's voices. Enabled turns voice chat on or off. |
Media¶
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Hear media and sounds from | Camera position or Avatar position: where your "ears" are for media and sounds. |
| Auto-play media | Never, Always, or Ask before media on a parcel starts playing. |
| Media first-interact | Which media you can click straight into (without a first click to focus it): from Disabled up to All MOAP (media on a prim). |
| Play media attached to other avatars | Untick to hide media worn by people around you. |
| Auto-play media attached to your HUD | HUD media plays straight away. Untick to make HUDs follow the auto-play setting above. |
On Linux, parcel music needs the GStreamer "good" plugins (gst-plugins-good). The Arch and Debian
packages install them for you; with the plain download, install them from your distribution. See

Voice¶
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Microphone Noise Suppression | How strongly background noise from your microphone is filtered, from Off to Max. |
| Hear voice from | Camera position or Avatar position. |
| Move avatar lips when speaking | Lip movement while you talk. |
| Echo Cancellation | Stops others hearing themselves through your speakers. |
| Toggle speak on/off with toolbar button | On: one press of the Speak button or key turns your microphone on or off. Off: you talk only while holding it. |
| Automatic Gain Control | Evens out your microphone volume. |
| Voice Input/Output devices | Choose your microphone and speakers and set the mic volume. |
Other sounds¶
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Play sounds from gestures | Hear the sounds that gestures play. |
| Show voice dot above avatars | The green dot above people who are using voice. |
| Play typing sound | The keyboard sound when people (including you) type in nearby chat. |
| Play teleport sound | The whoosh when a teleport starts. |
Decoded sounds are kept between sessions in the sound cache (Preferences → Advanced).
Advanced
Debug setting AudioOpenALHRTF turns on 3D binaural audio for headphones.
