Chat extras¶
Slipstream adds a few things to text chat that make it easier to talk while you play, roleplay or dance. Chat settings are in Me → Preferences → Chat.
Chat window in mouselook¶
In mouselook (first-person view), pressing Enter normally opens a small chat line: you can type, but you can't read what people said before. Slipstream can open the full chat window instead, with the nearby chat history, so you can follow the conversation while you reply.
Turn it on in Me → Preferences → Chat → Chat Bar: Enter in mouselook opens the chat window with history. It is off by default.
When it's on:
- Enter in mouselook opens the Conversations window on nearby chat, see-through so it covers less of your view.
- Your mouse is freed, so you can scroll the history or click another conversation.
- Escape, or pressing Enter on an empty line, hides the window again and gives the keys back to movement. Clicking back into the world returns you to mouselook too.
- Leaving mouselook puts your windows back the way they were.
Enter shortcuts¶
In Chat → Chat Bar, under Enter shortcuts:
| Option | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Ctrl+Enter shouts | On | Ctrl+Enter sends the line as a shout. Off: it just says it. |
| Shift+Enter whispers | On | Shift+Enter sends the line as a whisper. Off: it just says it. |
| Alt+Enter sends OOC | Off | Alt+Enter sends the line as out-of-character chat, wrapped in the OOC prefix and postfix (see below). |
In Chat → General, Shift+Enter: new line makes Shift+Enter start a new line in nearby
chat instead of whispering (type /whisper to whisper). In IMs, Shift+Enter always starts a new line.
Ctrl+Up and Ctrl+Down in the chat line bring back the messages you sent before, so you can resend or fix one.
Roleplay helpers¶
Also in Chat → Chat Bar, under Out of character and poses:
- OOC prefix and OOC postfix: what Alt+Enter wraps an out-of-character line in (by default
((and))). - Auto-close OOC: if you start a line with
((and forget the closing)), it is added for you. - MU* poses: a line starting with
:is sent as an emote, like/me.:wavesshows as "Your Name waves".
Chat channel selector¶
Show the channel selector in the nearby chat bar (Chat Bar tab) adds a channel number next to the
nearby chat line. Anything you type without a /channel in front goes to that channel. Handy for
talking to a HUD or scripted object without typing /5 every time. Typing /setchannel and a number
in chat changes the same setting.
Mentions and pings¶
- Typing @ in nearby chat suggests names of everyone in the region, not only the people within chat range.
- Only ping when the conversation isn't focused (General tab): no sound or highlight for messages in the conversation you're looking at and typing in.
- Never ping for nearby chat (General tab): nearby chat never plays a sound, flashes or highlights, even when someone mentions you.
