Second Life,
without the slowdown.

Slipstream is a Second Life viewer rebuilt for the computers people actually have today. Clubs, events and crowded sims stay smooth, the world looks better, and it sets itself up for your machine the first time you run it.

Free and open source.

Built for busy places

Most viewers slow to a crawl when a sim gets crowded, no matter how good your graphics card is. Slipstream was rebuilt from the ground up so your graphics card does the heavy lifting, which is what it's good at.

About 4× fasterIn our testing in a busy scene with comparable settings, Alchemy ran at about 24 FPS. Slipstream ran at about 90 FPS on the same PC.

Your results will depend on the scene and your computer.

What you get

A modern viewer, with the everyday things you'd expect.

Smooth when it's crowded

Events, clubs and shopping sims with lots of avatars stay playable.

Better lighting and shadows

Lights cast proper shadows, and newer graphics cards can use ray tracing for even cleaner results.

Set up for your computer

It picks sensible graphics settings for your PC on the first run, from laptops to gaming rigs.

Sharp on modern screens

Crisp text and a crisp world on high-resolution and 4K monitors.

Windows and Linux

First-class on both, including modern Linux desktops.

Handy extras

A frame rate limiter, a third-person shooter camera, flexible key bindings, instant jumping, and better building and scripting tools.

Download

Slipstream is in beta, so you may run into the odd bug. If you do, please let us know.

Windows 64-bit

Windows 10 or 11. Unzip the download and run SlipstreamViewer.exe. If Windows shows a warning, click More info, then Run anyway.

Linux 64-bit

Most current distributions (Ubuntu 24.04 or newer, Fedora, Arch). Unpack the download and run ./slipstream.

You'll need a graphics card from roughly the last eight years with up-to-date drivers.
