Importing from another viewer¶
Moving to Slipstream from Firestorm, Alchemy, Black Dragon or the official Second Life viewer? You can bring your chat history, preferences, key bindings, toolbars and more with you, so Slipstream feels like home from the start.
Open the importer from Me → Import from Another Viewer…, or with the Import from Another Viewer… button in Me → Preferences → Advanced.
Safe to try
The importer only reads the other viewer's files; nothing in the other viewer is changed. Slipstream backs up its own settings before every import, and Undo last import puts them back. Passwords, login details and other secrets are never read or imported.
How to import¶
- Choose the Viewer to import from. Only viewers found on your computer are listed.
- Log in first if you want per-account things (chat history, per-account settings, toolbars, contact sets, teleport history), then choose the Account to read them from. They go into the account you are logged in as.
- Tick the categories you want in the list on the left. Select a category to see exactly what it contains on the right, with what you have Now and what you'd get (Imported). Untick any row you don't want.
- Click Preview for a summary of what would change. Nothing is changed yet.
- Click Import.
Some things (colours, window positions, display and language settings) only take full effect after you restart Slipstream; the importer tells you when.
What can be imported¶
| Category | Notes |
|---|---|
| Settings and Per-account settings | Preferences that have a matching setting in Slipstream. |
| Notifications (don't-show-again) | The pop-ups you told the other viewer not to show again. |
| Colours | Your colour choices. |
| Window positions | Where your windows were. |
| Toolbars | Which buttons are on which toolbar. |
| Key bindings (merged) | Added to Slipstream's key bindings. Bindings that would clash with a key Slipstream already uses are listed but left unticked, so you decide. |
| Contact sets | Firestorm contact sets. |
| Teleport history | Where you've been. |
| Graphics presets, Camera presets | Saved presets. |
| Poser poses | Saved poses (Black Dragon pose files work too). |
| Font sets | Interface font choices. |
| Windlight presets | Sky and water presets. |
| Auto-replace lists, Spelling dictionaries | Your auto-replace words and custom dictionary words. |
| Chat transcripts | Your saved IM and chat history. It is merged with any Slipstream history you already have, never replaced. |
Tick Show unchanged and skipped to also see rows that are already the same in Slipstream, and rows that can't be imported, each with the reason. Typical reasons:
- Graphics settings from other viewers mostly don't carry over, because Slipstream has its own renderer with different settings.
- Settings tied to that viewer's install or computer (cache folder, window size, update settings) are skipped.
- Features Slipstream doesn't have (for example Firestorm's built-in animation overrider) are skipped.
Undoing an import¶
Undo last import sets the settings back to what they were, restores files from the backup and removes
files the import added. Chat transcripts are not undone, but every transcript the import changed has a
copy of the original next to it, ending in .pre-import.
Firestorm chat logs¶
The importer handles Firestorm's chat log quirks: logs without timestamps, logs split by date, custom log folders, Windows-style files, and Firestorm installed as a Flatpak on Linux. Anything it skips is listed with the reason.
