Fixing stuck avatars and textures

Sometimes an avatar looks wrong on your screen: stuck in a T-pose, frozen mid-dance, with arms at odd angles, or wearing grey or blurry clothes. Usually the problem is only on your side (something didn't download properly), and Slipstream has tools to fix it without relogging.

All of these only change what you see. Nobody else is affected, and nothing is changed on the avatar itself.

Refresh Animations

Refresh Animations fixes an avatar that is stuck in a T-pose, frozen, or not playing an animation it should be. It downloads every animation that avatar is playing again and restarts them, in the same order, so the avatar picks up where it should be.

Where to find it:

  • Someone else: right-click them → Appearance → Refresh Animations.
  • Yourself: right-click yourself → Refresh animations, or Avatar → Refresh animations.
  • Animesh (animated mesh objects such as pets and NPCs): right-click it → Refresh Animations.
  • With pie menus on, it is in the same place in the pie.

Slipstream also notices most animations that failed to start and retries them by itself; Refresh Animations is for the cases it misses.

When it doesn't help

If the avatar is really playing the wrong animation (for example a broken AO or a stuck pose ball), everyone sees the same thing and only its owner can fix it. Refresh Animations can only repair animations that failed to load on your side.

Other animation fixes

Command Where What it does
Reset Skeleton Right-click an avatar → Appearance; for yourself Avatar → Reset skeleton Puts the avatar's bones back to their normal shape. Fixes stretched or twisted limbs left behind by mesh bodies or attachments.
Reset Skeleton And Animations Same places Resets the bones and also restarts animations.
Stop animations Avatar → Stop animations Stops every animation on your own avatar.
Resync Animations World → Resync Animations (Ctrl+S) Restarts everyone's animations together, so couples' dances and group dances line up again.

Refresh Textures

Refresh Textures re-downloads the textures of an object or avatar, including everything an avatar is wearing. Use it when something stays grey, blurry, or shows the wrong texture after a change.

  • Someone else: right-click them → Appearance → Refresh Textures.
  • Yourself: right-click yourself → Refresh Textures.
  • An object: right-click it → Tools → Refresh Textures.

If your own skin or clothing layers look wrong to other people, use Advanced → Rebake Textures instead (the Advanced menu is turned on in Me → Preferences → Advanced → Show Advanced Menu).

Lots of blurry textures everywhere?

That is usually video memory, not a download problem. See Video memory.
