Look and feel¶
How to change the way Slipstream's interface looks and behaves: the skin, fonts, menus, tooltips and a few handy windows.
Skins¶
Slipstream comes with five skins. Choose one in Me → Preferences → Skins, click Apply, and restart Slipstream.
| Skin | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| Slipstream (default) | Dark, blue-tinted greys with the blue and purple of the Slipstream logo. |
| Alchemy | The Alchemy viewer's dark skin, which Slipstream's is based on. |
| Heretic | An alternative dark Alchemy skin. |
| Ionic | A refreshed version of an older skin. |
| Second Life | The official viewer's classic look. |
Fonts¶
In Me → Preferences → Skins, Font changes the font used for the whole interface. Changes apply straight away, no restart needed (if some text looks off, close and reopen its window).
Built-in choices: DejaVu Sans (default), Ubuntu, Roboto, Noto, Liberation, Droid, OpenDyslexic (designed to be easier to read for people with dyslexia), Cascadia Code and Celestia.
- Font size adjustment makes every interface font bigger or smaller, in points (0 = normal).
- Add Font… lets you pick a
.ttfor.otffont file from your computer (or its Regular, Bold, Italic and Bold Italic files together). It is copied into your settings and switched on.
If you used a different font in Firestorm, the importer can bring that choice over.
Pie menus¶
Tick Pie menus in Me → Preferences → Skins to get the classic round right-click menus (as in Firestorm and older viewers) instead of list menus, for land, avatars, objects and attachments.
- Pop-up animation: the slice labels slide into place as the pie opens.
- Outer ring shade: slices that open another pie get a shaded outer ring.
Hover tips¶
Hover tips are the little boxes that appear when your mouse rests on something in the world. Their options are in Me → Preferences → Advanced:
| Option | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Show hover tips on objects, avatars and land | On | Turns in-world hover tips on or off. Tooltips on buttons and other controls are not affected. |
| Show tips on all objects, not just interactive ones | Off | Also shows tips on objects that don't do anything when clicked. |
| Show tips on land | Off | Shows parcel information when you hover over the ground. |
| Tooltip delay | 0.7 s | How long the mouse must rest before a tooltip appears, in the world and on buttons. |
Interface and HUD size¶
In Me → Preferences → Advanced, UI size makes the whole interface bigger or smaller, and HUD Scale does the same for HUDs. On high-resolution screens Slipstream already follows your desktop's scale setting, so you usually only need these for fine-tuning.
Quick Preferences¶
Me → Quick Preferences… (or the Quick Prefs toolbar button) is a small window with the things you change most often: Hover height, Draw distance, FPS limit, Shadows, Upscaling, Ambient occlusion, Depth of field, Glow / bloom and HDR, plus buttons to open the Photo Studio and Preferences.
Toolbar buttons¶
Right-click a toolbar → Toolbar buttons… (or Me → Toolbar buttons…) to add buttons. Slipstream adds buttons for Photo Studio, Scopes, the Camera Recorder and Quick Prefs, among others.
Freeze World¶
World → Freeze World (Ctrl+Shift+F) pauses the world, for you only: avatars, moving objects, particles, animated textures, water, sky and clouds stop, while you can still move the camera and use the interface. It's made for photos. Choose it again to carry on. Nobody else is affected, and it always starts switched off.
Frame rate in the status bar¶
The current frame rate (FPS) is shown at the top right of the screen. To hide it, turn off the debug
setting ShowStatusBarFPS.
