Local Assets

Local Assets lets you try out files from your computer in-world before paying to upload them: meshes, animations, textures and PBR materials. Only you can see them, and nothing is uploaded until you choose to.

It's made for creators: check how a mesh looks and fits, how an animation plays on your avatar, or how a texture looks on your build, and fix it in your 3D or image program while you watch.

Open it with Build → Local Assets….

The tabs

Tab Files What you can do
Mesh .dae, .gltf, .glb models Rez a copy in the world, or wear it as an attachment.
Rezzed The mesh copies you've rezzed.
Animations .bvh, .anim Play them on yourself or on an animated object.
Textures Image files Put them on objects.
Materials .gltf, .glb materials Put them on objects.

On every tab:

  • Add… loads a file.
  • Upload… uploads the selected file to Second Life through the normal upload window, with its L$ cost shown before you confirm.
  • Unload frees the file from memory but keeps it in the list (dimmed) so you can load it again. For a mesh this also removes its copies from the world.
  • Remove forgets the file and takes it off the list.

Live updates: when you save the file again in your 3D or image program, Slipstream notices and reloads it, so the in-world preview updates by itself.

Mesh

Select a mesh, then:

  • Rez in World places a copy in the world. You can move, rotate and stretch it with the build tools like any object (only you see it).
  • Attach… wears a copy at the attachment point you choose, for checking clothing and accessories. Joint Positions includes the mesh's joint-position settings, for fitted bodies that need them (changing it reloads the mesh).
  • Select in World selects a rezzed copy and opens the Build window.

Right-click a mesh for the same options, plus Attach To, Detach and Derez All.

The Rezzed tab lists the copies in the world: Select in World, Focus Camera (point the camera at it), Derez (remove the selected copies) and Derez All.

Animations

Select an animation, choose who plays it (My Avatar, or Selected Object for an animated object you've selected), and click Play or Stop.

Textures and materials

Select an object (or use Select Face in the Build window to pick single faces), then select a texture or material and click Apply to Selected. Without picked faces it goes on every face of the object.

Local textures and materials are only a preview on your screen. To keep them, upload them and apply the uploaded version.
