The Build window

The Build window is where you create and edit objects. Open it with Build → Build (or press Ctrl+B), or right-click an object → Edit. This page is a tour of its parts; Building tools covers the extras Slipstream adds.

The tool row

The buttons at the top switch between Focus (camera), Move (move objects by dragging), Edit, Create and Land.

In Edit mode, choose what dragging the handles does:

Mode Shortcut What it does
Move Drag the arrows to move.
Rotate hold Ctrl Drag the rings to turn.
Stretch hold Ctrl+Shift Drag the boxes to resize.
Select Face Pick single faces, for texturing one side.
Align Line several objects up.

Options below:

Option What it does
Edit linked Edit one part of a linked object instead of the whole thing. The arrow buttons step through the parts (or faces).
Link / Unlink Join selected objects into one, or split them.
Stretch Both Sides Stretching grows the object on both sides at once.
Stretch Textures Textures stretch with the object instead of repeating more.
Snap and the grid list (World grid, Local grid, Reference grid) Snap to a grid while moving. Options… sets the grid size.
Pivot at root prim Move and rotate around the root prim. See Building tools.
Show Selection Outlines Outline what's selected.
Select Reflection Probes Allow selecting reflection probes.

Create mode has buttons for each basic shape (cube, prism, cylinder, sphere, torus, tree, grass and more). Click a shape, then click in the world to make it. Keep Tool selected lets you make several in a row; Copy selection makes copies of the selected object instead.

Land mode is for editing terrain on land you own: Select Land, Flatten, Raise, Lower, Smooth, Roughen and Revert.

General tab

The object's Name, Description, Creator, Owner and Group:

  • Share lets group members edit it; Deed gives it to the group.
  • Click to chooses what a left-click does: Touch (default), Sit on object, Buy object, Pay object, Open, Zoom, Ignore object or None.
  • For Sale sets a price; Show in search lists it in Search.
  • Anyone may Move or Copy it; Next owner may Modify, Copy and Transfer it.

Object tab

  • Locked (stops it being moved or deleted by accident), Physical (falls and can be pushed), Temporary (deleted after a minute) and Phantom (nothing bumps into it).
  • Position, Size and Rotation, typed in exactly.
  • The shape's settings: path cut, hollow, twist, taper, top shear, slice and so on, or for sculpted prims the sculpt texture.
  • For meshes and sculpties, the Level of detail table (see Building tools).

Features tab

  • Animated Mesh: lets a rigged mesh object play animations by itself (animesh).
  • Flexible Path: makes the object bend and sway (hair, flags, skirts), with Softness, Gravity, Drag, Wind, Tension and Force.
  • Light: makes the object glow light, with colour, Intensity, Radius and Falloff. Pick a projection image to make it a projector (spotlight) with FOV, Focus and Ambiance.
  • Reflection Probe: makes the object an area where reflections are captured, for shiny surfaces inside it. Dynamic includes avatars in the reflections.
  • Physics Shape Type, Gravity, Friction, Density and Restitution (bounciness).

Texture tab

Material chooses what's on the selected faces:

  • Textures: the classic system, with a colour texture (Texture (diffuse)), Bumpiness (normal) and Shininess (specular), each with its own repeats, rotation and offset.
  • PBR Metallic Roughness: a modern PBR material. Choose from inventory, Edit Selected, Save to inventory, and Copy to Blinn-Phong.
  • Media: a web page or video on the face. Choose… sets the address, Remove clears it.

Also Color, Transparency %, Glow, Full Bright (always fully lit), Alpha mode (None, Alpha blending, Alpha masking, Emissive mask), and texture Mapping, scale, Repeats per meter, rotation and offset.

Content tab

The items inside the object (scripts, notecards, animations…). New Script adds a script; Permissions sets the permissions of everything inside at once. Drag items from your inventory onto the list to add them.

Every link and face of the object, with thumbnails. See Building tools.
